I helped write a newspaper with co-op. Everyone in the class had a different assignment as well as a deadline. We had articles about cars, fashion, faith, sports, cooking, restaurant reviews, pets, and other classes. We also had comics, scripture, art, creative writing, and poetry. After the newspapers were printed, we gave them out to friends and family.

In co-op we published a newspaper called Homeschool Happenings. Everyone in the middle school participated in the making of the newspaper and writing of stories. One of the articles I wrote was about my sister's figure skating. My mom also proofread it for me. Her input was that it needed to flow better instead of short disconnected sentences. I corrected it and then Mrs.C read it and told me it was good before publishing it.

I drew a cover for a language arts project. I used markers, copy paper, and pencil. I used the pencil to sketch my drawing before filling it in with ink so that if I made mistakes, I could erase them. While I was finishing the drawing, I learned not to smudge my work. I learned it is important to work from top to bottom so that my hand does not rest on wet ink. Also, because I am right handed, it is important to work from left to right. The markers I used are non-toxic and acid free. This makes it last longer.

I made a spaghetti sauce recipe from scratch. I used tomatoes, bell peppers, garlic, salt, sugar, pepper, oregano, bay leaves, and rosemary. The tomatoes are an acid, the sugar is carbohydrates, and salt is neither an acid nor a base. With Mom's help, I combined all the ingredients in our Crock-Pot. We ended up cooking it longer than expected because there was so much liquid. Heat and evaporation helped brake down the individual components and make a delicious sauce.

These are all the things I used for my garden this year.

• Shovel, made from wood and metal, used for turning the soil and general digging. Used mostly in the spring and fall, not much in between.
• Rake, made from wood and metal, used for mixing manure and Epsom salt in, also used to remove grass and weeds initially, used to make plot level, and to create rows for planting. Used mostly in the spring and fall, not much in between.
• Trowel, made from plastic, used to dig small holes to drop seeds into and to dig up weeds and loosen soil after planting seeds.
• Cultivator, made from plastic, used to loosen soil and help remove weeds.
• Fence posts, made from metal, used to frame the boundary for my garden.
• Chicken wire, made from metal, used as a fence
• Wire cages, made from metal, used to contain and support plants as they grow
• Stretch tie, made of plastic, used to hold plants in place.
• Hose, made of soft plastic, used to transport water from the spigot to the garden.
• Sprinkler, made of plastic and metal, used to equally spread the water around the garden.
• Milk jugs, made of plastic, used as mini-greenhouses.

This past spring, I planted a garden. I obtained permission to use a plot on the property that belongs to the church next door. I did this by presenting them with a proposal that included what I was planting, how big I wanted my plot, and what I was going to do with the produce. Then we tilled the soil several times and removed all of the grass and weeds. I also mixed in manure and Epsom salt to enrich the soil. Then I put up a fence. Every morning, I went out to water and weed my garden, as well as pick anything that was ripe. We also tried to find ways to keep pests like rabbits and squirrels out.

We got an old dresser that was missing a drawer off freecycle. We threw the body of the dresser away and used the drawers to make bookshelves. We nailed it together, painted it dark brown, and decoupaged the inside with pages from an old book.

I started training Kelly to do tricks like sit, lie down, and roll over. I also trained him not to jump up on people, to wait at street corners, and not to run out in the street after a car. He is improving, but he still has a long way to go. Ways that I can discipline Kelly sending him to his crate, withholding treats, saying no forcefully, and spraying him with water. It is reasonable to expect a dog to obey simple commands.

We went to a PATH production. They used a microphone, spotlights, sound system, and amplifiers for the instruments. I am sure there are other things, but that is all we noticed.

For Fine Arts, I sang a vocal solo. I practiced once a week for two months. Performing a solo is different than performing with a group because with a group, you depend on the other people to do what they are supposed to and performing solo, it is only you. I prefer working in a group because there is less stress about messing up; I have a smaller part to play. The preparations are different because in a group everybody needs to be available and you have to work around everybody's schedule. With a solo, you can practice any time so long as you have your materials with you.

My coach taught me a lot about basketball.
A foul is when you grab or touch another player while guarding them.
A foul shot would be given when a player is fouled while they are shooting, or if the other team already has more than ten fouls, adding another gets a foul shot. A foul shot is specifically shot from the foul line. Usually, you get two foul shots when fouled while shooting. If you are getting a shot because the other team has more than ten fouls, you may only get one shot.
A double dribble is when you pick up your dribble and then start dribbling again.

The three basic positions are: Guard, Forward, and Center.

The Guard has two different names. The point guard brings the ball down the court and calls the plays. The point guard must be able to dribble well with both hands and pass well. The Shooting guard is the one who can shoot well from all positions. They are also very fast and good at dribbling.

The Forward also has two different names. The Small forward is usually very good at rebounding or can shoot well from a long range. They should be a good passer, hard driver, and good runner as well. The Power forward is the one who goes for short range shots and lay-ups. A good Power forward will be able to get lots of rebounds. They fight for an opening to do lay-ups.

The Center's job is to block shots and get the rebounds. They are rarely expected to shoot or dribble much. Mostly, they are really good on defense.

I learned how to hold my dribble all the way down the court, pass the ball to other players, and make a basket from the foul line. Usually, when I played basketball, I was a center.

When we were moving in to our apartment, I helped Mom paint our bedroom. We painted each wall a different color. I chose lime green and my sister chose purple. We used two different shades of each color. Then later, I helped Mom finish painting the room. This project was begun while I was a Junior, but finished while I was a Cadette.
