I share the responsibility of cleaning the kitchen with my sister. We have decided that one person loads the dishwasher and washes dishes by hand that can be placed in the drainer to dry while the other person wipes off counters, puts food away, washes any dishes that require special care, and sweeps & mops the floor. We clean the kitchen each day after dinner. If it gets messy during the day, we load and unload the dishwasher and save the rest for after dinner.
